Here’s an interesting interview with Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, shot on a roof in downtown Manhattan in 1988. This footage is completely raw and unedited, with cuts and sound interruptions intact. As such, it takes Kim a couple of minutes to get into the swing of things, but she talks about life as a woman in a rock’n’roll band, art, sex, playing bass, her projects Harry Crews (with Lydia Lunch) and Ciccone Youth, and she reads extracts from a book called So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star. The interview is about 20 minutes long and is split into two parts.
By now you’ll have probably heard Luna Lee’s cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile” on the gayageum. Now have a listen to Luna’s scintillating version of Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s classic “Scuttle Buttin’”. Ooft.
Before the chill lady with the smooth voice, ringing guitar, and possibly Sapphic tendencies became the stuff of (sometimes laughably bad) cliché, Joan Armatrading was a pre-Lilith Fair anomaly.
Armatrading was born in the West Indies in 1950. Her family moved to Birmingham, England when she was three, and sent for her and her siblings as they could afford to—she wasn’t able to rejoin her parents until the age of seven. Though her father was a musician, she was never allowed to play his guitar, and taught herself on a pawn shop acoustic her mother traded for two baby strollers.
Armatrading quit school at 15 to start factory work supporting her family, but at 16 she was performing her own material in clubs, and at 18 found herself in the London stage production of Hair!, (notoriously shy, she abstained from the nude scenes). It was here she met Pam Nestor, with whom she wrote her debut album, Whatever’s for Us.
Her music is absolutely beautiful: complex, sweet, and sincere. It’s easy to see how she launched 1,000 imitators.
As famous for her introspective, tender vocal delivery as her closely guarded private life (and performance anxiety), Armatrading is believed to have married her girlfriend in a quiet ceremony last year.

Skeletonwitch. What else would you have expected them to look like?
Ohio heavy metal band Skeletonwitch is best known for three things: awesomely brutal music, awesomely brutal shows, and basically being the sweethearts of metal. Seriously, every interview you read with them is gracious and based on a love of the scene.
Since metal is a genre not granted too much cultural legitimacy by music critics at large, it can be a little sensitive and venture into “We Are Very Serious Business” territory, which is why it was so awesome to see Skeletonwitch put this video on their Facebook page.
While the metal genre doesn’t frequently lend itself to self-deprecation, it’s nice to see heshers with a sense of humor.
Plus, when a six-year-old little girl in her pink jammies does a growl like that, you just gotta show some respect.
When it comes to feminist-punk, there’s none more femme, nor punk, than the mighty Peaches.
So it’s no real surprise to learn that Peaches has been following the Pussy Riot trial closely, and has turned her hand to making both a video and a track in support of the persecuted Russian rock group.
A YouTube casting call went out last week, asking for fans to send in their own, pro-Pussy Riot footage to be included in the video. Well it is now done and dusted, and available to watch online. The track itself, called “Free Pussy Riot”, is available as a free download, and all Peaches is asking in return for her work is that everyone sign the Free Pussy Riot petition at change.org.

In March 2012 three members of Pussy Riot, Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevitch, were taken into custody by Russian authorities for their participation as part of a protest at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow. Their punk prayer is and was an act of free speech and the charges of “hooliganism” and detainment of the three women are seen by the world as a cruel heavy handed act of oppression, are being carried out to discourage free thought and speech in Russia.
If Russia wishes to be a part of the modern globalized world it must adhere to the standards and principles of a free nation where its people have the right to have a free and open dialogue about all subjects. Discussion, debate, and action are the basic building blocks of a free society. By following through with the prosecution of these women Russian political bullies are currently making a mockery of free speech, free thought, and Russia’s own country’s constitution.
We, the citizens of the world and advocates for free speech, DEMAND the immediate release of Pussy Riot. The verdict is planned for August 17th - let’s show Pussy Riot our support!
The charges and punishments facing Maria, Nadezhda, and Ekaterina are nothing more than a political stunt by the Russian authorities and Russian Orthodox Chruch to retain control over the Russian people and instill fear into the free-thinkers, political activists, and artists of Russia.
The world is watching, and we do not like what we see.

Pussy Riot fans, check this out - Divorce have just released a three track teaser for their upcoming, self-titled debut album, and damn, it’s good!
If you don’t know Divorce, then let me direct you to the links at the bottom of this post for some introductions. In a nutshell, this majority-female band make a ferocious racket that takes all the best bits of experimental music, noise-rock, thrash and doom and blends it into a unique, powerful sound that is guaranteed to blast the cobwebs out of your ears.
Divorce will be released on vinyl and download through Night School label on September 17th, and the limited edition records run will be printed half on purple vinyl, and half on green vinyl. The label says:
“Divorce” is the culmination of four years of uncompromising noise-rock brutality. Long-time friends of ours, it is an honour to be releasing the debut full-length statement from a band who have set new standards in underground extremity. Since their formation in 2008 they have progressed from no wave dirge practitioners to an unique cult that blurs the boundaries of what ‘punk’, ‘noise-rock’ or ‘metal’ are presumed to sound like. Remaining slippery in definition but relentlessly focused, Divorce have evolved into a singular, incomparable unit.
Recorded by Ali Walker at Glasgow’s Arc Studio & Devil’s Own Studio, “Divorce” finds the band pushing their furious sound further than ever before; a torrent of pummeling rhythms and serrated, overdriven riffs, extended freak outs and ecstatic push and pull dynamics. Divorce are one of the best live acts in the UK just now, and if there is any justice in the world, they will make their way Stateside to slay you guys pretty soon. These debut album recordings have done the trick of capturing a great band’s live energy, which is no mean feat. If you’re new to Dangerous Minds then let me give you a little heads-up: I love all kinds of music and I promote a diverse bunch of bands and artists on this website. But I do have favorites - Nick Cave, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Leonard Cohen, The Clash, Joy Division, Bad Brains, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Arthur Lee, Roky Erickson and The Velvet Underground, are all lovingly and neatly stacked in the mausoleum of my DM archives - along with many unsung, forgotten or once-vilified bands,
Despite the somewhat “classic” collection of bands listed above, I do dig a shitload of new music. But the latest hipster top ten comes and goes as quickly as atrial tachycardia, suddenly accelerating the rock n’ roll heart before the thick bloody muscle kicks back to its old familiar rhythm.
New bands, new music, glide across my digital windshield, linger for a split-second, before the jittery wipers of my ADD thrust the whole sonic mess to the margins of consciousness, to join an ever-growing tidal pool of abandoned one-hit wonders and lost geniuses awash with the splintered wreckage of the good ship Adderall, where nervous little sailors once sang songs by Yeasayer, Interpol and Vampire Weekend.
You can take or leave what I’ve said in the preceding paragraphs, it’s just a bunch of linguistic horsehit that writers spew when they talk about rock and roll. If you’ve read Lester Bangs, then you know the sentiment, an intellectual finger fuck leading up to the real fucking deal: the music of an artist that excites by just doing what artists do: being fearless, reckless and challenging themselves. The beauty about rock and roll is no one really took it seriously, so those of us who do have a huge latitude in which to fail. PJ Harvey rarely fails.
